Breaking wave bubble measurements around ship model by optical probe

چکیده

The bubble sweep-down phenomenon around oceanographic research vessels generates acoustic disturbances. can be reproduced on a 1/30 scale ship model in wave and current circulating flume tank taking into account motions. Optical probe then used to measure locally the size velocity of bubbles generated by breaking waves. A comparison obtained results with more classical from detection image tracking is discussed. two methods provide complementary for characteristics. However, optical has advantage knowing position three dimensions space. overall this paper new elements study understanding addition previous 2D 3D studies, where dynamics clouds have been characterized. • Bubble studied model. Breaking measurements were conducted. velocities diameters determined. Our findings important implications marine vessels.

Measurements of Shallow Water Breaking Wave Rollers

Large scale laboratory experiments concerning breaking wave propagation over a fixed-bed, barred beach were performed. The primary observations of interest were video intensity time series obtained from a set of high-resolution video cameras in order to study the onset of wave breaking in shallow water and wave roller transformation in the surf zone. The approach is new in the sense that the an...

Optical wave breaking of pulses in nonlinear optical fibers.

A new effect appears in femtosecond optical pulse compression, using single-mode fibers, that we describe as optical wave breaking. In the fiber, frequency-shifted light in the leading and trailing edges of a pulse overtakes unshifted light in the pulse tails. Mixing of these overlapping frequency components generates sidelobes on the pulse spectrum. The effect often leads to computational inst...

Optical Pump-Probe Latency Measurements of Silicon CMOS Optical Interconnects

We present the first measurements of O/E/O conversion latency in a hybridly-integrated optoelectronic/CMOS chip designed for chip-to-chip optical interconnection. Using an optical pump-probe technique, we perform precise measurements with picosecond resolution that closely match our simulations. Optical interconnects have the ability to alleviate the looming CMOS interconnect bottleneck by prov...

Weight Measurements by Using Simple Optical-Fiber Sensors (RESEARCH NOTE)

The use of different optical-fiber sensors for weighing measurements is Abstract described. By using three different mechanical stressing mechanisms, the operation of the fiber-to-fiber transducer systems are tested and the results are presented. Parameters such as sensitivity, hysteresis, resolution, and dynamic range are measured. A comparison of the results has shown that the sensor system m...

Bubble entrainment by breaking waves and their influence on optical scattering in the upper ocean

Breaking waves at the ocean’s surface inject bubbles and turbulence into the water column. During periods of rough weather the scales of wave breaking will increase with increasing sea states and result in mixing of the surface waters and the turbulent transport of bubbles to depth. Depending on their concentrations and size distribution, the entrained bubbles can significantly change the optic...
